What is Merino Wool?
Merino wool might very well be the PERFECT fabric. For babies and adults alike.
It comes from the Merino sheep, which (according to Wikipedia) are originally from Turkey and Spain and have been known since the Middle Ages as having the softest and finest wool.
Here’s a picture of one:
Aren’t they cute?
Merino wool is renewable and sustainable
These lovely Merino sheep grow full coats once a year and need to be shorn regularly to avoid physical stress and blindness.
Then their wool is then spun into the beautiful Merino cloth we know and love. This process uses far less resources than the heavy water-draining cotton industry.
Being a natural fiber, it is biodegradable. Meaning once your baby has worn his/her Wizard Wear to shreds, it will break down quickly and go back into the earth, as compared to synthetic fibres which can sit in landfills for hundreds of years.
But there’s more!!
Merino wool is so comfortable, warm, AND breathable
The sheep don’t get sweaty in their coats, and neither do we.
In fact, Merino allows your body to sweat and expel moisture, absorbing up to 35% of its weight in moisture.
The surface of Merino wool fibers is textured which doesn’t allow bacteria to move in and cause odour. This means you can let your Wizard Wear air out many times before you need to wash it. This further reduces the load on the environment, and on your precious time! And when you do wash it, it dries quickly, which is convenient isn’t it?
Merino wool adjusts to keep you cool in the heat and warm in the cold. When your baby is busy moving, it absorbs moisture and evaporates it away from their skin. And when they’re at rest, it captures the moisture in the air and heats it up next to their skin. Cool, eh?
Not to mention, Merino wool is lightweight and layers fantastically with other garments. Like we said before, it is the PERFECT fabric, for babies and adults alike.
