I think the best part of summer is that we finally allow ourselves to slow down a bit. And as a busy mother, taking some time to reflect on the spring behind us and the fall ahead are powerful ways to feel more grounded and integrate all of life’s lessons into our psyches.
Of course, as a parent, it can also be a stressful time of wondering how to fill in the long days with activities once preschool/daycare/school wind their way down. But hopefully the kids will find their sweet spot on the beach, in the sandbox, or in the park, and you’ll have at least a few extra moments to bask in the warm summer air and simply observe.
This time last year, I was ready to spend the summer adventuring after experiencing our first successful attempt at camping with a toddler. I remember that despite living in the country, there was something magical about packing up the car, driving to the campground, setting up the tent, cooking over the fire, and simply watching the wonder in my boy’s eyes as we woke up in the forest. It was exhilarating, rejuvenating, and incredibly bonding for our family.
This year however I’ll be doing my exploring vicariously through you all since – my big news – I’m on the verge of having my second baby! So my summer lounging will look more like lazing around in the yard. And perhaps even dreaming up some new baby clothing designs! 😉
Speaking of being in the yard, gardening really is the perfect metaphor for the spiritual depth that summer can offer us. The quiet stillness and long days give us time to observe all the seeds we’ve planted (literal or metaphorical), tend to the growing plants, and anticipate our harvests this fall and winter. Whether it’s projects, personal goals, a mindset shift, or a new direction in life, taking the time to reflect on our experiences, draw out the lessons, and integrate them into new habits and thought patterns can help us connect more powerfully to the lives we’re creating.
So whether you’re out adventuring or spending time at home this summer, I hope you’ll have a chance to relax, rest, and reflect on everything you’ve created so far this year, and get ready for a great fall and winter ahead.
Have a wonderful summer and I’m looking forward to connecting with you all as a mother of two!
